Severance · For an evening you can give your attention to
Apple’s mystery follows office workers whose memories separate their work lives from their lives outside the workplace. Adam Scott leads the cast. That premise makes this our concentrated-viewing pick: choose it when you want a puzzle to follow, not simply something moving in the background.
Our verdict: make this the deliberate choice for a quiet evening. Start with the first season if you are new, and resist turning the episode into a scrolling companion. The attraction of a high-concept mystery is having enough mental space to consider its questions; a distracted hour can be a poor match for that kind of entertainment.
Critical context: Lucy Mangan praised season two’s mystery and emotional force (The Guardian, January 17, 2025).
Where to look: Apple TV’s official US series page. The dated review above concerns season two, not a newly watched or newly released season. Check current subscription terms and the maturity information on the service page.
For the room: put the phone out of reach and choose comfortable, low-glare lighting. There is no need to crank the picture into its brightest mode simply because it is movie night. If a reflection is distracting, move or dim the light before blaming the screen.
- Best fit: viewers who want a sustained mystery and can watch without constant interruptions.
- Start here: the first episode, rather than a late-season clip or recap.
- Service link: Apple TV US; exact plans and availability should be checked at the source.
The Diplomat · For political intrigue and sharp exchanges
Netflix describes a US ambassador navigating a demanding posting in the UK alongside a complicated marriage. Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell star. We place it in the conversation-heavy corner of the watchlist: the choice for someone who wants political stakes and relationship friction in the same evening.
Our verdict: consider this when you want people negotiating, maneuvering and testing one another. A conversation-driven premise is a different kind of viewing commitment from a spectacle-led action film. If you are new to the series, start at the beginning so the relationships and shifting loyalties have room to make sense.
Critical context: Sarah Dempster praised the fourth season’s tense entertainment (The Guardian, October 15, 2026).
Where to look: the official Netflix title page. Netflix currently presents four seasons on that public listing. Check the catalogue shown in your own US account before making a subscription decision; a public marketing page is not a personal account-entitlement check.
For the room: prioritize intelligible dialogue over dramatic volume. If you have to keep turning the sound up and down, try the basic checks in our dialogue tip below. The right viewing choice is more enjoyable when following a conversation does not become a household group project.
- Best fit: viewers drawn to political and relationship drama.
- Start here: season one if you have not followed the ongoing story.
- Service link: Netflix; confirm your region, plan and current listing.
Slow Horses · For spy-series fans, with an honest caveat
Apple’s espionage series follows a sidelined group of British intelligence operatives, with Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb. Our reason for including it is the viewing lane it occupies: a spy-series option for people drawn to flawed teams and institutional friction, rather than another list built around one genre alone.
Our verdict: newcomers should treat this as a series to start, not a current-season shortcut. Returning viewers have a more specific decision: whether they want to keep following the team now or wait until the current run is complete. That distinction matters if your ideal weekend means finishing a story without a weekly wait.
Critical context: Jack Seale found season six less distinctive (The Guardian, September 16, 2026).
Apple’s published schedule places season six between September 16 and October 21, 2026. On this column’s October 17 publication date, it is therefore not a completed-season binge. Check the service for the episodes currently available.
The reservation belongs in the recommendation. A useful watchlist can tell a returning fan that a current review is cooler than expected and still explain why a newcomer might explore the series from the beginning. There is no obligation to turn every selection into a standing ovation.
- Best fit: viewers already interested in espionage series and ongoing character ensembles.
- Start here: the beginning for newcomers; check the episode schedule for the current season.
- Service link: Apple TV US. Season-six finale scheduled for October 21, 2026.
Abbott Elementary · For a lighter change of pace
For an evening that does not need another conspiracy, our fourth choice is a workplace-comedy catch-up centered on teachers at an underfunded Philadelphia school. Hulu’s official guide confirms streaming access. This is the lighter counterweight in the selection, not a promise that every episode is suitable for every child.
Our verdict: put it on the shortlist when you would rather spend time with a workplace ensemble than follow a sprawling thriller. Think of the choice as changing the mood of the evening. The most useful recommendation is sometimes permission to pick something lighter instead of treating every television session like homework.
In his September 21, 2022 review for The Playlist, Brian Tallerico praised the ensemble and the mixture of optimistic comedy with grounded school-life commentary. His assessment covered the opening two episodes of season two, not the newest season.
Where to look: Hulu’s official show listing and viewing guide. We are recommending the series as a catch-up option; we are not presenting the older review as an assessment of newly released episodes. Check the current catalogue and maturity information before choosing for a shared household.
For the room: keep the controls simple. A familiar volume level, a working remote and captions when useful can matter more to a relaxed evening than another round of menu adjustments. Save the ambitious system overhaul for a day when nobody is already waiting to watch.
- Best fit: a lighter workplace-comedy evening or a catch-up from the start.
- Review scope: the cited professional assessment is from the opening of season two in 2022.
- Service link: Hulu; check the current listing and content guidance.
Stream Smarter · Clearer dialogue before buying more equipment
If following speech is difficult, begin with the path the audio actually takes. Are you listening through the TV speakers, a soundbar or a receiver? Is that the output the television is currently using? Write down the normal input and output before changing anything. A second active audio path or an unexpected output selection can make troubleshooting unnecessarily confusing.
Then check the exact product manual for a dialogue, speech or similar mode if the equipment offers one. Change one setting at a time and compare a short passage at a comfortable volume. The name and effect of these controls vary by model; this is a planning method, not a universal menu sequence.
Use subtitles or captions when they help. Apple’s Severance listing, for example, includes English caption options. Availability and the way to enable them depend on the title, app and device. There is nothing second-class about using a feature that makes an evening easier.
If you are investigating picture quality as well, verify the subscription and device requirements before assuming that every title will arrive in the highest available format. Netflix’s own help explains that playback quality depends on the supported setup. A television specification by itself is not a guarantee about a particular streaming session.
For a larger audio change, use our soundbar setup checklist before buying. Confirm ports, connection routes, placement and the rest of the system together. The useful upgrade is the one that solves the problem you actually have.
How this weekly column works
The Living Room Critic combines official program information, credited published criticism and Screen & Living’s editorial selection. We state the date and scope of a cited review, keep plot discussion light, and distinguish a catch-up suggestion from a current release. The critical observations above are attributed to their original writers; our verdicts explain which kind of evening each selection may suit.
Listings were checked on October 17, 2026. Streaming catalogues, release schedules, prices and subscription terms can change. Follow the official title links in the source list before paying for a new service.
A new edition appears each Monday. Pair the watchlist with Ask Garage Guy for the practical questions that come up around the room, and follow the publication feed for the next issue. The email edition is currently a separate launch list, not an active delivery service.
A couple of useful answers.
Are all of these shows new this week?
No. We mix recent criticism with worthwhile catch-up suggestions and identify the dates and scope of the reviews we cite. A current recommendation is not a claim of a current premiere.
Do I need subscriptions to every service?
No. Start with the selections available through services you already use. Check the official catalogue and plan conditions before paying for another subscription.
